Setup / Repair

Early in the pandemic I began acquiring the tools and knowledge to do setup and fretwork on my own acoustic guitars. I then began doing work for friends. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it. I work slowly, carefully, and methodically, seeking to capture the best playability out of an instrument.

I've been playing guitar for over 25 years. I play professionally and teach. I'm a guitarist who works on guitars. There are specifications of how a guitar should be set up, but there are also the realities of how the guitar plays in the hands of the musician. Neither of these should be overlooked. I bring my experience of how a guitar should feel, play, and sound to the precise measurements needed for a well setup instrument.

Please contact me if you are interested in acoustic guitar setup, fretwork, pickup installs, or other related work. I operate from my workshop in Hillsborough, NC.

"I am very meticulous about the guitar my great uncle built for me, I had Alan do work at the nut of the guitar to allow for more comfort while playing. Finished in a timely manner, Alan brought my guitar back playing better than it ever has. Polished nut, clean fretboard, and an evenly filed nut." - Chase Z.

"I had some action height and buzzing issues from the factory on my newly purchased Eastman dreadnought. Alan did a fantastic job setting up the guitar and making it much more comfortable to play. He adjusted the nut and saddle and leveled the frets with great care." - Mik T.
